Sleep Apnea Facts and Sleep Apnea Symptoms
One of the most common sleep disorders is sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is related to snoring and often goes undiagnosed. This is mainly because people do not notice it (as it occurs in the sleep) and don’t take it seriously. But it’s a condition that if untreated can be dangerous for health.
What is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea is a disorder that happens or occurs during the sleep. It’s a condition when a person stops breathing for few seconds or even minutes. This kind of interrupted breathing can happen many times during the sleep. Sometimes breathing doesn’t pause but it becomes very shallow. These types of conditions of breathing interruption or shallow breathing are responsible for snoring. In the case of sleep apnea the oxygen level in the blood drops and brain disrupts the sleep to open the airway. It is important to know that not everyone who snores has sleep apnea. There are certain sign of sleep apnea or symptoms of sleep apnea which can help us to differentiate between normal snoring and sleep apnea.
Signs of Sleep Apnea – Sleep Apnea Symptoms
Sleep apnea is one most common sleep disorders and often hard to diagnose. But there are symptoms which help us to identify the sleep apnea disorder.
In sleep apnea snoring becomes chronic and loud. Shallow breathing and long pauses in breathing during the sleep also the symptoms of sleep apnea. Choking and gasping during the sleep can also be the symptoms of sleep apnea. Shallow breathing and breathing interruption disturb the sleep rhythm during the night and therefore you don’t get enough deep sleep and this results daytime sleepiness or drowsiness and extreme fatigue. Depression and irritability can also be symptoms of sleep apnea. Often in sleep apnea people wake up with dry mouth and sore throat. Morning headache can also be a sign of sleep apnea.
Types of Sleep Apnea
Types of Sleep Apnea are:
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA): In the case of OSA or Obstructive Sleep Apnea the airway get blocked or collapsed and the air doesn’t reach to the lungs properly. This blockage in the airway causes the snoring. In the condition of OSA, the airway gets blocked partially and sometimes completely.
Central Sleep Apnea (CSA): In this situation brain stops sending signals to the muscle which are responsible for breathing. Central Sleep Apnea does not happen for airway obstruction rather it involves the central nervous system.
Complex Sleep Apnea: This is in some respect a mix of Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Central Sleep Apnea.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Central Sleep Apnea are more common in males. Normally people who have smoking habit, overweight and age over sixty five have a higher risk of sleep apnea especially OSA.
Sleep apnea is a very common sleep disorder but it’s a serious medical problem. It should not be ignored and if anyone has it, it is extremely important to get treatment.
