Klein Leven Syndrome Symptoms and Causes
Kleine-Levin syndrome, which is commonly referred to as sleeping beauty syndrome, is a condition of the neurological system of some people which causes them to have periods of eating or sleeping in unreasonable amounts. When this type of syndrome begins an individual generally sleeps the majority of the day and also of the night. An individual's behavior changes and they may experience confusion, lethargy, apathy, or be disorientated. Kleine-levin syndrome can cause an individual to be bedridden, uncommunicative when they are awake, tired and make attending school, working, or taking care of themselves very difficult.
The symptoms of Kleine-levin syndrome generally include hypersomnia which is one of the principal symptoms and is found in all individuals with this syndrome. Individuals are usually treated in the beginning for some type of sleep disorder. Other symptoms include things such as varying mental states when the individual is having an episode of KLS, it may be difficult to wake the individual and they may become irritable or even aggressive if they are prevented from going to sleep. People who have developed Kleine-levin syndrome may show signs of amnesia, hallucinations, become delusory or appear to be in a dream like state.
In some cases’ individuals may experience uncommon compulsions during an episode of Kleine-levin such as eating excessive amounts of food, which affects about 75 per cent of people with this type of syndrome. Other compulsions may include things’ hyper sexual behavior, sexual advances which are considered to be inappropriate. Hyper sexual behavior is not as common in women as it is in men and it is related to considerably longer courses of the syndrome.
Suspected Causes of Kleine-levin
Exactly what causes Klein levin syndrome is not known, however, it is possible for an individual with KLS to experience weeks, months and maybe years without any symptoms. The symptoms can recur without any warning.
There are a few researchers who theorize that Kleine-levin or sleeping beauty syndrome as some call it may be a hereditary predisposition, while some other researchers consider it to be a disorder of autoimmune systems. Some recent studies have suggested that there is a link to dopamine transporter density which may be the cause of this syndrome.
Diagnosis of Kleine-levin syndrome
There are other conditions which can be confused with KLS and because of the similarities some times doctors may not diagnose the sleep beauty syndrome correctly. Many people are treated for some other sleep disorder due to the fact that hypersomnia is one of the main symptoms. Another problem is that many times people with Kleine-levin syndrome may be diagnosed as having a psychiatric disorder.
Treatment for Kleine-levin syndrome
Doctors have not found any particular treatment for this type of syndrome. However, there are stimulants which may be used to treat sleepiness, but they do not do anything to improve unenergetic psychological features. Stimulants are generally given orally.
